NEWS: TETHYS4ADRION Showcased at the Plastic Free Day in Rovigo, Italy
Dr. Tomaso Fortibuoni, from ISPRA, presented the TETHYS4ADRION at the Plastic Free Day, held on October 11 in Rovigo, Italy.
Fernanda Moroni, from the River Po Basin District Authority (associated partner) illustrated some of the initiatives implemented in the Po River to combat plastic litter.
The event was organised by Plastic Free Onlus. It was an opportunity to raise awarness and collectively reflect on the crucial role that rivers play as conduits of plastic pollution to the sea. The event made it clear that addressing marine litter effectively requires intervening upstream, focusing on rivers as key pathways through which waste reaches the marine environment.
The event started with exhibition of artefacts discovered the during waste collection activities. It was followed by two public discussions. The first one focused on plastic pollution in seas and rivers, as well as the local projects to combat it, while the second tackled environmental crimes and littering.
During the event several topcis were emphasized. First, citizen engagement and the active role of associations in mobilising communities, organising clean-up activities, and fostering behavioural change. Second, support and financing of scientific research and monitoring projects, which provide the data and knowledge needed to understand the presence, sources, and dynamics of riverine litter. Third, a need for multi-level, collaborative approach, combining grassroots action, scientific research, and institutional support.
Among other attendees, around one hundred high school students from Rovigo visited the event.
