NEWS: TETHYS4SDRION with Stakeholders from Slovenia: Public Discussion “Measures for Reducing Waste in the Soča Valley”
On April 22, 2026, a public discussion titled “Measures for Reducing Waste in the Soča Valley” was held in Tolmin, Slovenia.
Dr. Andrej Kržan, from the National Institute of Chemistry, and Uroš Robič, from the Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia, joined discussion as panelists. They shared results from a workshop held with local stakeholders in February, highlighting measures deemed feasible, effective, and socially acceptable, and proposing concrete steps for local implementation with the support of the TETHYS4ADRION project.
Mr. Mitja Constantini, from Komunala Tolmin and, Mr. Aljoša Križnič, and Mr. Blaž Močnik, from Tolmin Angling Club shared the observations from their everyday (professional) engagement along the Soča River. They pointed out that there has been noticeable improvement in attitudes toward waste disposal, particularly among local festival organizers and participants, as well as tourists in general. However, it has also been observed that an increasing number of locations along the Soča River that are less accessible or not considered typical popular spots are being used as beaches and picnic areas, resulting in waste being left behind and eventually entering the river.
The discussion provided a clearer understanding of the main sources of litter in the Soča River, highlighted issues that local stakeholders are already addressing effectively, and identified areas where additional support and cooperation are needed. Based on these insights, and through continued collaboration, measures will be developed to address the problem at its root.
The public discussion was part of Soča Trout Festival (Festival soške postrvi) and organized by the Tolmin Angling Club and the Municipality of Tolmin.
