NEWS: TETHYS4ADRION Talks: “A Plastic Ocean” Screening and Accompanying Discussion on Aquatic Plastic Pollution

On May 26, 2026,  the documentary film “A Plastic Ocean” was screened in Bologna (Ex.Dynamo Bar). Following the screening, Dr. Tomaso Fortibuoni (ISPRA) discussed with the audience the research on pollution in rivers across the Adriatic and Ionian region carried out within the TETHYS4ADRION project. TETHYS4ADRION river activities represent an necessary link in addressing ocean plastic pollution, since rivers are one of the main pathways through which litter is transported to seas and oceans.

The film screening was part of the “Cinema per l’Ambiente” series organized by Legambiente Bologna. The documentary “A Plastic Ocean” was directed by Craig Leeson and features David Attenborough.

We recognized film as an effective medium for communicating the severity of pollution and the consequences it leaves on marine ecosystems, wildlife, and the appearance of oceans themselves. The documentary simplifies the language of communication and helps explain scientific findings and research efforts aimed at solving this issue. This is particularly important because changing people’s habits regarding the use and disposal of plastic is essential for achieving a long-term and large-scale reduction in marine and ocean pollution.
